LED bulbs installed on the big-taillight of a bus

For reference, this is what it looks like when the bulbs of the big-taillight of a bay-window bus are exchanged to LED bulbs.

I read a blog of a friend that lives in the States and found out that HOOTERS will open a restaurant in Tokyo this month.  That's good news!

I don't know if they'll stick like TGI friday's but, anyway, I'll go check it out.

The pictures are of the HOOTERS in the US.

LED-part2

Front turn-signal bulb holders for buses '63-67 and '68-71 also need similar modification but in these cases, the process is not as much of a deal.

Another products of BSR's.  I installed it on my '66bus in hope that I'd notice the difference but I couldn't.  But the positive effect in understandable logically, right?

LED

P3106873.jpg

It's been seven months since I started selling LED for VWs and I've sold quite a lot of them.  Most are bought by VW owners in Japan but I also get lots of questions and a few orders from foreign countries.

P5148981.jpg

I've also installed them at my shop.  When turn signals are involved, the installation gets complicated a little but with a lot of installing I succeed in completing the process.  The LED lights are extremely bright, leading to safety for the drivers and other cars around them.  LED bulbs are recommended for owners of old VWs that are worried about cars behind them.

I've installed these bulbs on many VW cars but, of course, I haven't yet had experience installing on all years and models.  My recent experience was installing this.

PA167202.jpg

A taillight holder for a '70-'71 Karmann Ghia.  The head of the LED bulbs is a bit too large for the holder so I had to go through the hassle of enlarging the hole so the LED would fit.

PA167205.jpg

PA167204.jpg

This is what it looks like when you turn it on.

Installation is possible.  It's just that it's a hassle.  That's my conclusion.

Kyoto

R0011487.jpgR0011490.jpgR0011493.jpgKyoto, having survived the air-raid in the war back in 1944-45, is a city where much of the scenery of traditional old Japan still exists.  Because of that, it is a popular spot for tourist from foreign countries.

P9206285.jpg

There are many old temples kept open as tour spot.  With the streets crowded with visitors, driving a car would be difficult so I took out a foldable bicycle out of the bus and used that to move around.

R0011534.jpg

The traditional Japanese look of the scenery is good to the eyes not only of foreigners but also of us Japanese.

Varicolored curps.

Munching on a pickled cucumber, I go on.

"Yatsuhashi," a popular Kyoto gift.

R0011598.jpg

I came across a lounge for Amex card (Gold or higher) owners and decided to take a look.  Of course, I don't own junk like Gold one (lol).

R0011589.jpg

I spent a comfortable time there drinking tea.

Tea break 2010

The information for a middle-sized VW event came. This time, it's in Sizuoka prefecture.  Of course, I'm thinking of getting a booth as I always do.

Catalogue

PA137125.jpg

PA137126.jpg

I obtained this rare old item from Mr.Suganuma who owns a VW shop called "Bus stop" in Yokohama.  It was the catalogue published in the first year bay-window buses were introduce to Japan, released by a VW dealer called Yanase.  Mostly, it explains about the different between split-window buses and ba-window buses.  They put empasis on the point that new buses have been improved to be more comfortable than the old buses.

PA137123.jpg

These pages explains about the specification parts on the panel-vans that are sold in Japan.

PA137124.jpg

I'll try to show you all pages of the catalogue in the near future.  If you would like to know the meanings of the Japanese sentences in the catalogue, I'll attempt to translate them when I have time to spare.

Amazing T-2 toy

P7223656.jpg

This expensive toy bus is very intricately made in an astonishing level.  I would say this is rather a collector's item than a toy.

Sleeve

P7243762.JPGI exchanged clutches for some hundreds of VW cars and, as is known, there aren't many throw-out bearings (for VWs up until 1970) that are in good quality, including the German brand (Sach's, Meyle and Luke) ones that come in several different types.  There used to be good bearings maybe around ten years ago.

P7243786.jpg

When the operating shaft is an aftermarket product, it's difficult to find a bearing that will work well with the operating shaft.  Problems you have when they aren't compatible are strange noises from the bearing and/or the bearing and shaft wearing out (the one in the picture is German).

P7243796.jpg

So, lately I've been using this sleeve to modify clutches (used for VW cars 1971 and on) in order to use them instead of the old clutches on VW cars made before 1971.  This works very well because the clutches for VWs 1971 and on are more advanced than the ones before 1971 and so the new clutches fit better.

P6051317.jpg

All bearings on the photo are used for years 1971 and later but each are of different brands.  Bearings are in better quality after 1971.  We always use Sach's (not Brazilian made!) or Meyle (not shown on the photo) brand ones with genuine operating shafts and long length operating levers because they allow you to build a good clutch system.

The best part about taking this method is the feel of the clutch when it's actually used.

P5088753.jpg

I've already used this method on several cars and haven't had any problems.  My customers are all satisfied with the result.

The VW shops in west Japan I visited

I stopped by at  some VW shops in west Japan during my Kyoto trip.  I don't usually have the opportunity to meet the owners of those shops so I had been wondering if I could visit them this time.  Of course, I coudn't visit all the shops but I was able to go see a few.

Garage Iwase

R0011438.jpg

They located in Kasugai in the Aichi prefecture.  They have always been purchasing good products from us.  Their friendliness encouraged conversation and I had a good time visiting them.

Busdeath

P9186177.jpg

What a great shop name!  The owner of the shop is a really hot guy with character!  He took me to dinner and we had a good conversation on topics unrelated with VW.

Manny's

P9216443.jpg

The owner and I had met at the event in California several times before but I completely forgot his face (sorry)!  I took a picture of my bus that I parked in front of his shop, making the picture seem as if it was a picture he took of his cars on sale to put on his website.

OHVcustoms

P9216461.jpg

The owner of this shop is a really honest guy!  Actually, I wasn't planning on going to this shop but the owner of Manny's recommended me to stop by because a great tour spot is very close to where they're located (about two minutes away).

Bug in Miki

lastbug_omote.jpg

Around this time of year, there are no VW events in or near Tokyo but there is one on October 31, 2010 in Hyogo prefecture (700km from Tokyo).  That's father away than Kyoto (500km) but I am thinking of getting a booth if I can make it.

If you'd like to know more about the event, ask me.

Latest issue of "Street VW's"

R0011724.jpg

The latest issue of "Street VW's" is available now.

PA016860.jpg

In this time, "Street VW's" has written about our LED bulbs using four whole pages.  The articles in this magazine, as with regular Japanese magazines, is usually all in Japanese, but in this time, our LED installation guide is bilingal.  Translation were checked and edited by me and my girlfriend.
