Santa's Lil' Helper Cruise

PC240140.jpg

Nao who is an employee of Flat4 organized a charity event called "Santa's Lil' Helper Cruise" held in Tokyo on Dec. 23rd.

The event was held in the States also, on Dec. 5th by DKP3.  Nao is the only Japanese member of Them.

Many people came to the event and brought canned foods and precooked noodles for donation.  The food will be donated to children in need through YMCA JAPAN.  Of course, I went there with cans of clam chowder in the passenger seat.

End of the year party

We organized an end of the year party at my shop's garage yesterday which we do every year.  I invited customers who usually use my shop for maintenance.

PC200017.jpg

We bought a lot of ingredients at Costco.  We all participated in preparing the food..

Winter has already come in Japan and it was very cold in the garage but we still had a great time!

Cat in the restaurant

DSC03852.jpgAfter the "Hotrod custom show," the president of "VS," his wife, and I went to Chinatown in Yokohama.

There are lots of Chinese restaurants and there's never a time when I can smoothly choose one to eat at because I can't tell if one is good just by looking at the exterior.

DSC03857.jpg

Although I considered choosing one I haven't been before, I finally decided to take them to a restaurant I had eaten at a few times.

The food there is not the only good thing about that restaurant.   They have a cat and that's the main reason I chose the place.

DSC03856.jpgA cat?  In a restaurant?

Yup.  A cat.

Many people including foreigners came to the show.  I had a great time but also got a little tired.  I had a lot to do and spent two whole days for the show and preparing for it.

The show was great but so was the exhausion I got from it.  But what better exhausting thing is there for car-lovers?

Vintage Speed

02.jpg

We started selling products from a great Taiwanese company called "Vintage Speed."   I decided to visit some shops in the northern part of the main island of Japan this week. Unfortunatelly, I couldn't go to all the shops I wanted to go to.

Anyway visiting shops is very exciting thing for me because I usually don't have the opportunity to visit them.  Japanese VW shops don't usually have much conection between eachother.  I ,owning a shop that also sells parts, am in a position where I can associate with many other shops.

Here are some pictures from my business trip.

Volkswagen cruise to Arizona - U.S. trip

C.by.SAM2010-601.jpg

Last time, I visited the States for checking and buying parts, the boss of one supplier invited me to join a cruise to Arizona by VW vehicles using Route66.  It was such an exciting thing for me but I hadn't much time to go on the whole cruise (4days) because I had to stop by at many suppliers around California.

So I joined them for one day, just getting a taste of Arizona.  There were 8 people on the cruise: four Americans, three Germans and me a Japanese.  What an international cruize!

P6040935.jpg

P6040942.jpg

P6040924.jpg

Out of the seven cars we used on the cruise (including the boring car I rented), two were streched type2 vehicles.  That was the first time I saw streched ones.

Tea break 2010

Last sunday, I took part in a VW event called "TEA BREAK 2010" annually held in Shizuoka.  I was able to get a booth right next to FLAT4's and had a excitement going on at the event to lift up the VW sprit!

PB148150.jpg

PB148139.jpg

We have had heated competitions with them in VW product sales.  It's a good match, they being one of the largest companies in Japan selling VW products and we being a small but powerful company with trusted technical knowledge that comes from actual experience in the shop garage, providing maintenance and repair services which is not within thier capability.

The two that at the event that day were guys that I know and can talk with so I was able to have a fun "battle" and our customers probably enjoyed it too, for the entertainment and the discounts.

PB148145.jpg

This event isn't that big, only having been held ten times.

PB148157.jpg

PB148165.jpg

PB148164.jpg

PB148163.jpg

PB148166.jpg

The evnet space is located about 250km from Tokyo, in the Shizuoka prefecture.  The highway route to Tokyo gets jammed with heavy traffic in the afternoon on Sundays and last year it took seven hours to get back.  So this year, we killed time in Shizuoka before we headed back to Tokyo.

PB148169.jpg

We decided since we came to Shizuoka, this would be a great occasion to have something Shizuoka is famous for.  This is what we had, an example of an "unagi(eel)" set you'd get at a nice unagi restaurant in Shizuoka.  It's about US$40.

As expected, our way home was smooth with much less traffic than last year, though that doesn't matter  much because I wasn't driving this time.  My customer, also a friend of mine, did.

Anyway, I had a great day!

I'm going to have a great time!

Chinese one

PB077994.jpg

I'm testing an alternator made by a Chinese manufacture.  A chrome-finished alternator is great to have when you're showing your engine to someone.

Anyway, there have been times lately where products from Bosch have been disappointing.   To add to that, when I asked about their products I got new in the US to thier staff at the Japanese branch, they seemed to care only about the products they offer at their branch.

Ummm...

Wednesday this week was a holiday in Japan.  There was an event in Daiba, a famous tour spot in Tokyo, to I went to check it out.  Usually when I say "event" it's VW-related, but this one, held by a company releasing a magazine called "Lightning," was American-related.  They had American clothing and other items for sale.  Fans of American cars, motorcycles and culture gather for this event.

It was a huge crowd at the event, unthinkable for a VW event.  I thought about getting a booth next year.

LED

P3106873.jpg

It's been seven months since I started selling LED for VWs and I've sold quite a lot of them.  Most are bought by VW owners in Japan but I also get lots of questions and a few orders from foreign countries.

P5148981.jpg

I've also installed them at my shop.  When turn signals are involved, the installation gets complicated a little but with a lot of installing I succeed in completing the process.  The LED lights are extremely bright, leading to safety for the drivers and other cars around them.  LED bulbs are recommended for owners of old VWs that are worried about cars behind them.

I've installed these bulbs on many VW cars but, of course, I haven't yet had experience installing on all years and models.  My recent experience was installing this.

PA167202.jpg

A taillight holder for a '70-'71 Karmann Ghia.  The head of the LED bulbs is a bit too large for the holder so I had to go through the hassle of enlarging the hole so the LED would fit.

PA167205.jpg

PA167204.jpg

This is what it looks like when you turn it on.

Installation is possible.  It's just that it's a hassle.  That's my conclusion.

Kyoto

R0011487.jpgR0011490.jpgR0011493.jpgKyoto, having survived the air-raid in the war back in 1944-45, is a city where much of the scenery of traditional old Japan still exists.  Because of that, it is a popular spot for tourist from foreign countries.

P9206285.jpg

There are many old temples kept open as tour spot.  With the streets crowded with visitors, driving a car would be difficult so I took out a foldable bicycle out of the bus and used that to move around.

R0011534.jpg

The traditional Japanese look of the scenery is good to the eyes not only of foreigners but also of us Japanese.

Catalogue

PA137125.jpg

PA137126.jpg

I obtained this rare old item from Mr.Suganuma who owns a VW shop called "Bus stop" in Yokohama.  It was the catalogue published in the first year bay-window buses were introduce to Japan, released by a VW dealer called Yanase.  Mostly, it explains about the different between split-window buses and ba-window buses.  They put empasis on the point that new buses have been improved to be more comfortable than the old buses.

PA137123.jpg

These pages explains about the specification parts on the panel-vans that are sold in Japan.

PA137124.jpg

I'll try to show you all pages of the catalogue in the near future.  If you would like to know the meanings of the Japanese sentences in the catalogue, I'll attempt to translate them when I have time to spare.

Sleeve

P7243762.JPGI exchanged clutches for some hundreds of VW cars and, as is known, there aren't many throw-out bearings (for VWs up until 1970) that are in good quality, including the German brand (Sach's, Meyle and Luke) ones that come in several different types.  There used to be good bearings maybe around ten years ago.

P7243786.jpg

When the operating shaft is an aftermarket product, it's difficult to find a bearing that will work well with the operating shaft.  Problems you have when they aren't compatible are strange noises from the bearing and/or the bearing and shaft wearing out (the one in the picture is German).

P7243796.jpg

So, lately I've been using this sleeve to modify clutches (used for VW cars 1971 and on) in order to use them instead of the old clutches on VW cars made before 1971.  This works very well because the clutches for VWs 1971 and on are more advanced than the ones before 1971 and so the new clutches fit better.

P6051317.jpg

All bearings on the photo are used for years 1971 and later but each are of different brands.  Bearings are in better quality after 1971.  We always use Sach's (not Brazilian made!) or Meyle (not shown on the photo) brand ones with genuine operating shafts and long length operating levers because they allow you to build a good clutch system.

The best part about taking this method is the feel of the clutch when it's actually used.

P5088753.jpg

I've already used this method on several cars and haven't had any problems.  My customers are all satisfied with the result.
