Jamboree Show

The biggest annual Japanese VW show in Japan was held in Tokyo on April 1st.  We had a big booth and made the biggest income for swap meets in our history!

Here are the photos we took at the show.  Hope you enjoy them.

U.S. trip

I will be staying the US for three month from the begging of June.  My US trip are usually only about two weeks so I'm especially excited about this one!

The 311 quake made me think about life and I thought of the things I'd like to do while I can.

I always experience new things when I travel.  Having lots of time on this trip, I'm looking forward to experiencing many things to add to my experiences.

Street Car Nationals

I participated in the biggest outdoor car show for custom cars (including VWs) on March 24th.  I had a booth at the swao meet this year as I've had every year.

I didn't bring VW parts to sell but I brought lots of old American goods instead.  The weather was great and a lot of car freaks came to the show.

At this event, they had a car, brought from an area affected by the tsunami, on display which caught the attention of many people.

I really had a good time as I always have at events!

Mr.Leonardo

I have an ad up on Samba to introduce LED lights for VWs. I got lots of inquiries, and this time I'd like to write about a very wonderful e-mail I got.

I had been exchanging e-mails with Mr.Leonardo, a VW owner in the States, with him being interested in our LED lights.  LED installation becomes complicated when changing the turn signals, and I had to explain the installation process, possible problems, and trouble-shooting procedures.  Explaining such things in English is very difficult for me.

It was taking quite some time for me, and then the earthquake hit on March 11th.  The quake brought panic, stress and confusion, and I had forgotten about having to explain about the LED lights.

About a 2week ago, I was reminded of our e-mail exchange by Leonardo's friend request on Facebook.  I appologized for my absence but his responce was far from being a complaint.

He sent me the following e-mail.

CHIAKI... PLEASE  LET ME  SEND YOU 250.00 DOLLARS  .... I WANT YOU TO HELP ANYONE WHO IS HUNGRY WITH FOOD... I KNOW IS DOES NOT GO VERY FAR BUT . I DONT HAVE THE HEART TO BUY LED LIGHTS FOR MYSELF WHEN THERE IS SO MUCH TRAGEDY SURROUNDING YOU.DO I SEND IT TO MYBOWS@NIFTY.COM? LET ME KNOW ASAP. I WILL GET TAIL LIGHTS ANOTHER TIME. I KNOW THE MONEY IS IN THE RIGHT HANDS TO GET IT TO THE NEEDY

What an act of kindness.

Before I was able to decide what to do, the money came to me by Paypal.  So I decided to accept his donation.  This money is more than just plain money.  It holds a man's wish.  I should put it to use in the best possible way.

Leo said in his e-mail that he's especially heart-broken to think about children being hungry, so I asked different people for advice andacame to the conclusion to send sweets.  The food being donated are mainly rice balls and cup needles so snacks (especially sweet things), according to the staff at a distribution center, would be greatly appreciated.  It sweets that I thought children would especially enjoy.

With Leo's 30,000 yen in hand, I went to a wholesale shop selling sweets.  I chose aweets that I thought children would especially enjoy.

P4221135.jpg

 P4221140.jpg

P4221139.jpg

It was quite a load.  I put package after package (many of them by the box) into the shopping cart but when I took it to the cash register, the total only came to 20,000 yen.  I thought of buying more but changed my mind and decided to donate the rest to the Red Cross because money could be used on various things.

P4221145.jpg

I hope the children enjoy the snacks.

Again, I'd like to thank Leo.

Flash Bugs Meeting

The largest VW show following Jamboree, "Flash Bugs Meeting," that was scheduled in May has been canceled.  It's a big disappointment but there's nothing to be done when you think about all the quakes and power outages and other things going on in this part of Japan.

Visited VW shops in Chiba

I visited several VW shops, yesterday, in Chiba (the prefecture east of Tokyo).  I went to give shop owners a chance to see the mufflers from Vintage Speed first-hand.

It's very interesting and even educational for me to see the garages of other shops.

Discussing different things with other shop owners very much stimulateed me.  Next week, I'm thinking of visiting shops in Saitama (the prefecture north of Tokyo.)

I was planning to have an open-house party before the Jamboree event, but because the event was postponed due to bad situations after the earthquakes, I have canceled the party.

Instead, I invited close customers and had a little party on the same day I had the open-house party planned.  With saving electricity being the trend(?) in Japan, we turned all the lights off and lighted the shop just with lanterns.

I'll have the open-house party when the Jamboree event is scheduled again.

Aftershocks

A lot of aftershocks have been occurred in Tokyo. but the number and size are not to be concern.

Moreover, I am accustomed to earthquake.  For a while. after the first biggest quake hit Japan, I ran from my shop holding a shop cat when big quakes occurred.  But recently, I only turn off a Kerosene heater!

To prepare for a blackout

Nothing will get accomplished without taking action.  Right now. I just have to try harder than before in doing what I can do now and keep looking ahead.  I've been away from my regular garage work for a few days since the first earthquake, but I've returned to work the day before yesterday.

I made a donation to the Red Cross.  I'm cutting back on electricity.  Now, I just have to keep doing the tasks I have before me.

P3179061.jpg

For now, the area I'm located in hasn't had any planned blackouts but nearby prefecture are.  They are taking turns having power outrages, for up to three hours at a time.  In preparation for a blackout, I've made the light shown in the picture, usinf fully-charged batteries and an LED light bulbs we well for VWs.  LED uses little energy so it'll hold up for a long time.

P3189077.jpg

I have a car radio and an antenna (Bug's) as well, to allow myself to stay informed of any news released on the radio.

Even without power, having a little light and sound will make a big difference.  I haven't used them yet, though.

Oversea-shipping

PA147146.jpg

We, Japanese are still in a state of confusion.  New earthquakes ave occurred in various places.  When they occur, I run from my shop holding my cat if it seems like a large quake.

Anyway, we can't be too careful...

For now, I have no trouble doing oversea-shipping.

I'd like to apporogize ahead of time in case we get orders or other e-mails from overseas and can't respond right away.

Postpone

It has been announced today that the Japanese VW event, "Jamboree" scheduled on April 3. 2011, will be postponed.  The new date is not yet announced.  It's very disappointing but there's nothing we can do about it in the current situation in Japan.

I hope for everything to return to normal soon and to have events again.

Earthquake

A HUGE earthquake hit the north of Japan.  It was a real scare but my shop was fine.

For now, the TV news program said over 1000 people had been confirmed dead and 641 missing.  Also 1426 people are injured in the earthquake and the tsunami...

I got lots of thoughtful messages from friends in foreign countries.  I really appreciate them.

We, Japanese has to confront this terrible situation. It will take more time until Japan gets back to normal.

Rebuilt?

P7223504.jpg

I got order from a Bay-bus owner to fix his steering gear box.  An owner of a '70 bay-bus wanted his poor steering gear  box to be repaired.

As you may know, there is no new gear boxes to T-2As in the VW market except the NOS ones you may find if you are lucky enough.

However difficult the situation, the bus owner had a serious problem and I had to immediately fix it somehow.  I got a rebuilt gear box in the States last time I visited.  Now with experience, I don't trust any "rebuilt" items made by unknown companies.  The gear box I got in the States was so cheap and, even without experience at the time, I had doubt about the quality but I decided to take a chance.

I took it apart for inspection and sure enough, it was...JUNK.

GOTCHA Morning cruise

VW cruise Chiba

We've said we'll be having an open-house party the day before the Jamboree show.  Well, a VW shop called Strollers located in Chiba had a morning cruise a week ago.

It's one more month until the show.  The VW market here is inevitably starting to heat up!

Jamboree show

P2203731.jpg

I received lots of posters and flyers of the biggest VW show held by the publisher of the Japanese VW magazine, "Street VWs".

We have to work hard to get the event heated up!  I've already reserved three booths and I'm plannning to use one of them just for products from VINTAGE SPEED.  Fair enough because the president of VS will prepare a product as a prize for the winner of the Jamboree show.

Man, am I pumped up for the show!

Oil cooler seals

P9276660.jpg

Leaking engine oil from an oil cooler is a pain.  There are cases where a puncture on the oil cooler is the problem, but most of the time it's a worn-out seal.

PC270292.jpg

All of the oil seals in the photo have the same part number 113-117-151A (021-117-151A) and is used on VW engine cases made in '71 and on.  This seals are available from many different manufacture companies in various countries.  Some seals could be made by German companies but could turn out useless.

So, Can you tell which one is the best to use?   Can you?

After having years of experience and running into many problems, I've got my answer.  When I  order products to suppliers, I choose carefully.

But recently, it's hard to find what I'm looking for...

Pin kit for Brosol fuel pumps

P2163325.jpg

This picture shows a Brosol fuel pump.  They're doing well in the market and they can be used so-so but these have possibility for a big  problem.

P8155122.jpg

The problem would be of the pin coming out, as shown in the picture.  It will of ccaurse cause the engine to act as if you were running out of gas and then completely stop.

Sometimes it would be just fine but of the pin comes out when you're out, that'd be frustrating.  I don't think having an extra pump in the car is something everybody does.

P2163328.jpg

A friend of mine (Japanese) made this to help prevent the problem.  Like genuine pumps, the pin is held by clips from both sides, preventing the pin to come out.  When I install Brosol pumps or when I work on a VW with a Brosol pump that hasn't had prevention method applied, I tell the owner about it and have them allow me to fit it into their VW.

P9025721.jpg

There are three types of Brosol pumps for T-1 engine and the pin holder lits my friend made work for all three, though in some cases you may need to modify them a bit.

P2163311.jpg

This is a Bocar pump (use with a short pushrod. A same type in the top photo) also made in Brazil.  These are made so the pin doesn't come out.

Volksworld Magazine (UK)

P2163313.jpg

I received the latest issue of "VOLKSWORLD" magazine today from the UK!

P2163315.jpg

Our LED bulbs appear in a "Staff Project" article.  I'm so glad to have them introduced and it made me feel even more enthusiastic about doing business targeted to people overseas.

Currently, the only foreign events I go to are the ones in California, but I'd like to start going to events of countries other than the US as well.  VOLKSWORLD Show is right before the Jamboree event in Japan so I won't be able to make it, but I'd like to participate for the first time in the European Bug-in this year.

I find it wonderfully amazing to become connected with different parts of the would through Volkswagens!

Exhaust Gasket

P2072438.jpg

The photo is of reproduced exhaust port gaskets wich you use between exhaust pipes (muffler) and cylinder heads (VW part number 111 251 261B).

P2072437.jpg

What's different between the left and right ones is that the one on the right has a piece of paper-like material between the metal plates (same for genuine ones), and the one on the left (which has been out for a few years) only has the plates.  I'm guessing there has been lots of people in the business that were disappointed with them.

This tyoe of small parts are things you can't usually make specific orders for, so you don't know which you'll get until you get them.

But I tried looking for the right ones, asking many suppliers I work with.  There was only one supplier that has them so I ordered a lot because I don't know if I'll be able to order them again tha next time I'm looking for them.

It was so so, no problems anyway.  Sometimes the distance between the two holes on bith sides of the gasket are not right, causing the stud bolts not to fit properly.  The holes to these gaskets were fine and they worked alright.

P1241779.jpg

I would never want to use the paper-type gaskets.  They are the gasket that often come with exhaust pipes from EMPI.  They are completely useless, breaking easily with heat, and they can be hard to take off the next time you want to replace them.

P2012108.jpg

The other day, I got these gaskets from a supplier in Canada!  Over 400 of their German NOS gaskets.  They are nice, and thick!  Man, I'm glad to have got these.

P2072447.jpg

I think you could tell the difference just by looking at the ones in this photo.

It's very detailed stuff, I know, but this is my job.

Worn out

P1291997.jpg

This was taken off from a different mechanism.  It's heavyily worn down and one side no longer works at all.

It's be great if there were products to replace just the worn out area.

Cargo lock mechanism (Split window bus)

P1231732.jpg

These are the door lock mechanisms for the side cargo door of early buses.  The rod won't move properly, causing the cargo door problems opening and closing, due to parts used for the mechanism being worn down.  I'd like to get replacement parts to replace the worn out parts but there aren't any available so I take the mechanism apart and fix parts I can work on.

P6272170.jpg

Door lock mechanisms are made not to allow tampering with components inside but I scrape off the rivets and take the cover off.

P6272103.jpg

This is the part that was worn out.  I thought of fixing it by welding it but I couldn't weld it.  I wonder what it's made of.  It doesn't react to magnets and it's a sort meterial but probably not alminum.  The lever that slides against the part is steel and so, with that steel lever being harder than the other material, the lever scrapes the other part causing that part to wear out.  It makes me wonder if they didn't think VWs would be around for more than 50 years.

P1221699.jpg

Anyway, after reacing the conclusion that I can't fix it by welding it, I was lost on what to do until I thought of making this.

P1221698.jpg

Scraping off the worn out area,

P7112672.jpg

I made it so I can fit this original part on.

P1231702.jpg

Using screws, I fastened two points.  This'll prevent it from turning.

P1231751.jpg

Checking to see that it moves smoothly, I grease it thoughly, put the cover back on and weld it.

P1231743.jpg

P1221675.jpg

You may have guessed but this procedure is quite a hassle.  These mechanisms come in many different styles and the interior are all different.   Here is photos with a different mechanisms.

Oh, how I hope for either replecement door mechanisms or at least replacement parts for the interior to be available soon.

To enforce safety

Changing the bulbs to your car to is good for regular cars but even more so for VW with small, harder-to-see taillights.  If you love your VW and also care about others around you (like if you think about the driver behind you and if he/she can clearly see when you turn your turn signal on), installing LED bulbs can greatly reduce your worries.

P1171389.jpg

P1171342.jpg

In this article, I'll write about when I installed LED bulbs on Oval taillights.  The Oval I worked on this time had rusty reflecters.  This was a problem when the Oval had normal bulbs because the reflecters didn't allow the light to reflect properly providing poor visibility, but with bright LED bulbs, rusty reflecters won't degrade the performance of the bulb.

It's hard to show how efficient these LED bulbs are by the photos but, you have to trust me, they're excellent.  The Oval owner loved them.

Solution

P1080813.jpg

When changing the muffler from a normal one to an aftermarket one, a common poblem you get is the heater hose ripping due to vibration from the engine causing the hose to rub against the hole on the engine tin.

This is how you can fix this prpblem.

You can get this smart little thingy probably at a home improvement store like Home-depot for less than 50 cents.

5th annual Street VWs Jamboree

"Street VWs," the Japanese VW magazine will have their fifth annual "Street VWs Jamboree," the biggest VW event in Japan on April 3, 2011 at Odaiba, Tokyo.  "Street VWs Jamboree" attracts VW-lovers from all over Japan and from foreign countries as well.  Visitors can enjyo a carshow, swap meet, and catering services operation on VW vehicles.

April in Japan is not too hot, not too cold, and not too humid which makes it a goor month for enjoying other locations and activities as well as going to the "Street VWs Jamboree."

We will have a booth, of course, and we'll even have a openhouse party at our garage the day before the event!  Feel free to stop by and join us!!

We'll keep you updated on our web and on this blog.

Don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions about our party or the event.  We'll clarify any uncertainties as much as possible.

BOOOOM

P1060669.jpg

An amazing vehicle came to us yesterday!  It's this trike on the picture, made by a German company called "BOOM," and it was my first time to see one other than on photos.

P1060667.jpg

I installed a genuine electoric distributor kit on this trike yesterday.

P1060671.jpg

When I install the kit, I always use a CB's blue cap and Taylor's 8mm wires with the kit as well.  I really love this kit for it's reliability and durability.

Unfortunatelly, the kit is no longer available from VW.  It's already less than 30 kits that we have left in stock now.

Best Bay-bus muffler

PC298910.jpg

I installed a Vintage Speed brand stainless steel muffler for 68-71 Bay-window buses on a 1970 bay bus.  I think it's one of the best products they offer.

PC290321.jpg

PC280297.jpg

The quiet sound of the muffler doesn't irritate me like other loud mufflers do.  It allows you to ride unembarrassed and frees you from the worry of irritating your neighbors when you're storing your car in the garage late at night.

PC298929.jpg

Unlike the Vintage Speed mufflers for early buses, this muffler has plenty of clearance from the road and works well for low-rider buses as well as regular buses.  Installation was easy and, best of all.  I love the simple and cool design!
